Description

The Iris Nebula is a bright reflection nebula located in the constellation Cepheus, and is also known as NGC 7023. The nebula is illuminated by a magnitude +7.4 star. The nebula is approximately 1,300 light years away from Earth and is six light-years across. The nebula is a reflection nebula, and the blue color comes from light reflected off soot/dust behind the bright star. There is lots of soot and dust surrounding the Iris Nebula, which is visible throughout the image.
